Advanced Construction and Tree Service joins forces with URS Corp on the Remington Arms remediation project.
The LSBP site is a 419-acre industrial property located in Bridgeport and Stratford, Connecticut. In 1912 the site was purchase by the Remington Arms Company, Inc. (Remington). Remington manufactured, tested and stored small-caliber and other ammunition at the site. After the Vietnam War, site operations scaled back and the facility eventually ceased production in 1989. E. I. Dupont de Nemours & Co. (DuPont) divested all operating Remington Arms facilities in 1993, but retained ownership of the closed Bridgeport/Stratford site under the name Sporting Goods Properties (SGP) which remains a subsidiary of DuPont.
The LSBP site is an interim-status Resource Conservation and Recovery Act (RCRA) facility. In August 1999, a soil stabilization project was implemented to begin treating impacted soil that had been excavated from various Areas of Environmental (AECs) across the site. In September 1999, two UXO items were discovered during the soil stabilization process. This discovery suggested that UXO might be present in upland areas of the LSBP property. In 2000, SGP conducted an extensive records search to identify the ordnance items that may have been manufactured, used, and/or stored at the site. The records search determined that the ordnance items associated with the site were black-powder filled munitions produced from 1895-1919 and ranged from 37-millimeter (mm) to 75-mm in size. As a result, SGP developed an EPA-approved process to identify and remove UXO from site soils. The UXO verification process consists of land clearing and survey activities, surface metal debris removal, geophysical data acquisition, evaluation and interpretation, and intrusive verification with remote and non-remote controlled equipment.
